The writing in this book is simply gorgeous. What a gift when a poet can be convinced to write prose, because each word is selected and crafted and inserted in each sentence as if its value were immeasurable. My only dismay at the end of this book was to discover that Mr. Haines is not a prolific writer (at least of books). Fewer and fewer people will have the view of the world that this author had-as a homesteader and trapper. We are blessed that he has shared this account of life at its most raw and simplest elements.

Haines is best known as a poet, and you can see it here--the ideas and descriptions are spare and powerful. He gets right down to flesh and bone, the essences of things: the people he's met, the traps set, stories heard, the bone-cold loneliness of the place, it's all right here to be read, as if everything superfluous has been chipped away and all we have left is the experience in itself, what the land has told the writer. For anyone who wants to see what a master can do with the English language, or who wants a glimpse of a land and a way of life the likes of which few will ever see again, here's your ticket.

With an impending trip to Seattle on the horizon, I ordered this book and some others -- but this one is by far my favorite! Not only is it thorough, scathingly honest in its critiques, and well-organized, but it is an absolute riot to read!!! Seriously, once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down... It is always good to find a travel guide that offers up actual opinions of landmarks, restaurants, hotels, etc., rather than just what seems like a tagline from a brochure -- and this book does not hold back, whether it be to compliment or to criticize...

I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are traveling to Seattle, moving there, etc... You will be entertained from cover to cover!!!

This book is especially great for new residents of the Seattle area. The descriptions on the hot-spots are dead on. Once in town, be sure to pick up a free copy of "The Stranger" weekly newspaper.

Excellent It bailed us out when we ran out of light before getting into the anchorage at Philipsburg and got us into several beaches that were completely deserted.

A bit dated is spots (it is 7 years old) For example, Saba has installed a number of excellent mooring on the south and west sides on the island, making it much easier to get either by the traditional landing or LLadder Landing on the West side. There is a road down to that now (no more 1000 steps to climb). However it was out when we were there (4-1-00)

We've sailed and chartered in the USVI and BVI numerous times and ALWAYS take this guide with us. From little known anchorages (Mermaids Chair on St. Thomas) to the most frequented (Great Harbor on Yost Van Dyke)this guide is without equal.

Although I have been sailing for 40 years, this was the most useful and informative sailing guide I have ever read. It adverted me from several unknown and possibly costly collisions...and I'm not referring to other boats. His harbor guides and navigational charts were indispensible! BUY BUY BUY!!!!

Cantrell, Montana, is the fictional setting for this series of interesting women dealing with the old west. Easy to read and very likable main characters. Has some humor, some romance, and interesting developments.

Excellent reading! Once you read the first book in this series, you will want to read them all! The story is exciting, thrilling, historical and filled with Christian values. It was a pleasure to read.

Sweet Carolina is just plainly..sweet.

Carolina goes out west to get some money from her dead brother's shop. First, she hates the West, the heat, the dirt, and the dirty guys out there. So when she arrives she finds out that her brother was a partner with one of those dirty guys. He tries to cheat her out of her share, so she shows him. By owning half of the shop. It doesn't take long for her to find some guys that aren't dirty, and that is when this book truly becomes sweet.

I consider this book the most complete on the Taino's art and crafts. The collection presented here was gathered from all over the world and represents all the islands of the Greater Antilles. Yet, it is not merely a "coffee table book" full of great pictures. The authors of the essays included represent some of the most important researchers of the Caribbean. Ricardo E. Alegría's essay "An Introduction to Taino Culture and History" is the best summary of this ancient people's way of life. This was a real achievement for the Museo del Barrio and Monacelli Press.

Here, the interested reader will find an unparalleled account of a great people sadly wiped out by greed. This book is the foremost reference on the people and culture from the carribean. Nowhere can there be found a more complete account. No other book can compare to what one can learn from this book. This is by far the best book I have found on the subject of precolumbian culture in the Carribean!

The book is based on El Museo del Barrio which resurrected the Taino culture for native New Yorkers in the late 1970's. It is a must read on the Taino people and culture. The color prints of the artifacts and the English translation of archive material brings one closer to what the Taino people were.

I used this book to help my son pass the Technician exam and he passed with ease. Mr. West's approach makes learning some of the difficult concepts of Technician theory simple. My son passed his exam today with flying colors and he is only 12 years old!

When writting this book, Dr. Rouse put a lifetime of research and studies on the Indians of the Caribbean into one work.
Since Rouse is considered the "Dean of Caribbean Archaeology", this book is a "must have" for anyone interested in the region and its native inhabitants.
Very few people have worked for so long, in so many locations and with such dedication as Dr. Rouse.

This book is great. Very informative and well written. I learned a great deal about my cultue, heritage and ancestry. It left me with a thirst for more.

There were so many things of the Taino Indians I didn't know about and this book gives such a wonderful view of their lives and heritage you think they were your neighbors next door! This book makes you realize how important it is to keep your heritage alive.

The story moves really fast and Maxx West developed the characters nicely. The story line was unique and wasn't like anything I have read before. If you have spent time in South America and spent it out in the jungle, you will be able to relate to the plot. You just never know what you will run into. The hero of the story is a believable every day person and he has lots of faults, but it was interesting to see how he developed as a person while enduring about everything that is conceivable. I'll keep an eye out for a sequel. Maybe Jon Gant will be the literary super-hero of the 2000's.

A friend told me about this book and thought I might enjoy it. I enjoy action-adventures and this one is loaded! Anyone who has spent time in Central or South America will appreciate the mental picture that the author paints, and you will find yourself cringing with every unforeseen predicament that the hero of the story finds himself involved in. If you like authors such as Cussler and Clancy, you'll love Maxx West! Read it but be prepared to stay up late at night to finish it.

TEACH YOURSELF BEGINNER'S RUSSIAN SCRIPT, by Dr. Daphne West, is a concise introduction to the cyrillic alphabet as used in the Russian language. It begins by teaching the letters a few at a time, then introduces the cursive form of the alphabet, and finally gives practice on reading common words.

I read the book to prepare for a vacation in Kyiv and was a bit disappointed that the book was written much more for future students of the Russian language than for tourists. While there are sections that deal with vocabulary of town and transport, much of the book introduces vocabulary that is not everyday. My other complaint is that cyrillic letters found in other former-soviet languages are not taught in the book. I understand that this is beginner's *Russian* script, but a two-page appendix that shows other cyrillic letters and their sounds would have been most helpful.

Also, for those hoping to finally master the difficult cursive form of the alphabet, you may be disappointed to see that there are only four pages dedicated to it.

All in all, if you are looking to learn just the alphabet for whatever reason, TEACH YOURSELF BEGINNER'S RUSSIAN SCRIPT is probably the best value, as it is less expensive than buying a full-fledged Russian textbook. It does have its flaws, however.

Before you start to learn Russian, I highly recommend that you get this book FIRST!!! I'm presently teaching myself Russian, and it is best to start by learning to decipher, first, the Cyrillic alphabet before learning Russian grammar.

And it's quite useful! Recently I was in the Russian neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, waiting for the bus that would take me to Kingsborough Community College to attend my swim class. As that bus usually takes a while to come, I used that time to try to mentally translate the Russian names of the stores in the area! A bit challenging, yes. But I had fun doing it! Like most people, the Cyrillic alphabet always seemed to me so imposing and frightening. But it really isn't once you've learned it. Now, whenever I come across words in Cyrillic in my routine travels, the first thing I often do is try to mentally interpret it. My desire to learn Russian came after viewing and listening to the Russian-language version of "The Amphibian Man" (1961) on DVD. Which I proudly, and happily, own!

Chapters 6 and 7 of 'TY Beginner's Russian Script' teach you how to write in cursive Russian. I'm presently in Chapter 6. Writing in cursive Russian can be a little tricky at times . But I intend to keep right on practicing until I get the cursives down pat.

I also own 'Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian' and 'Living Language Russian', which I would later use to learn how to speak in Russian, and learn the pronunciation of Russian words.

But this is an excellent aid in learning the Russian alphabet. Out of all my 'Teach Yourself' texts in French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese, 'Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script' is the smallest and most compact! I love this book!

Ok, so you want to learn Russian. Perhaps you're thinking of visiting the country, or maybe you just want to decipher that odd-looking Cyrillic alphabet. In either case, start with "Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script"! By spending a few hours with this book, you'll be MUCH better prepared to follow up with the many Russian phrasebooks for tourists. I've tried the reverse -- bought the phrasebooks and tried to memorize the sayings, but this way is much better. If you can learn to "decode" the Russian alphabet first, you'll find that you already know many, many Russian words, just by the way they sound. Dr. West combines a very logical approach to the Russian alphabet with fun exercises. You will find yourself reading Russian words by page 3. I was a professional linguist for many years and have studied Czech, French and German, so believe me when I say that this is really a nice little book for getting started in Russian. Will you be able to speak Russian when you finish this book? Of course not! But you'll have the right tools to decode that darn alphabet and for continuing on in learning Russian phrases. Do yourself a favor and don't skip this important first step.

This book is very handy when searching the back roads for interesting information, buildings, history, etc. of Texas.
I ordered the book as "used" at a substantial savings over the "new" price. The book is actually a new copy of the 3rd Edition. There is now a 4th edition out, and that is probably the reason for the price. The book is full of places I intend to visit that I had no idea existed before.

Shipping from the vendor (Ed Marks) was extremely timely, and I was happy with the condition of the book when it arrived.

Sure, we can all find Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, but what about the 11 foot roadrunner in Fort Stockton? Or the statue of Popeye in Crystal City? During the winter you can see migrating bald eagles on Lake Buchanan (where?), and the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is the only place in the United States where you can see a Chachalaca.

June Naylor Rodriguez's 2nd Edition of Texas: Off the beaten Path is not only a book of travel excursions, but also includes Texas trivia and tidbits of Texas history. My favorite part of the book is a chapter called Wildest West Texas. Using the recommendations in the book, my husband and I enjoyed a part of Texas we had always wanted to see and probably would not have known of all the local places to visit had it not been for Rodriguez's suggestions. Without the book we would not have known where to go or what to see. If we had done the Big Bend without this book, I doubt that we would have seen all that we did. Hats off to June Naylor Rodriguez.
